High-altitude deserts, ancient monasteries and some of India's most dramatic roads. A first-timer's guide to surviving and loving the Spiti Valley circuit.
The Spiti Valley — a cold desert mountain valley high in the Himalayas — is a bucket-list road trip for a reason: barren moonscapes, thousand-year-old monasteries, and villages that sit among the highest inhabited places on earth.
Acclimatise, don't rush
Spiti sits between 3,000 and 4,500 metres. Altitude sickness is real. A good itinerary climbs gradually — usually via Shimla and Kinnaur — giving your body time to adjust before the highest passes.
💡Drink plenty of water, avoid alcohol the first two days, and never ignore a persistent headache at altitude.
What you can't miss
- Key Monastery — the iconic hilltop gompa
- Chandratal Lake — the 'moon lake' (weather permitting)
- Hikkim — post a letter from the world's highest post office
- Langza — the fossil village with its giant Buddha statue
Spiti is not a comfortable trip. It's a great one. Go with a planned convoy, oxygen support and drivers who know these roads.
