Overview

Jaisalmer is built from the same yellow sandstone as the ridge it stands on, which is why it glows at sunset. Its fort is one of the very few in the world still lived in β€” families, shops and temples inside the walls, not a museum.

Beyond the city, the Thar opens out into the Sam and Khuri dune belts, where the standard trip is a camel or jeep ride to the dunes for sunset, then a desert camp for the night.

Main attractions

✦Jaisalmer Fort β€” a living fort with residents inside the walls
✦Patwon Ki Haveli and Nathmal Ki Haveli
✦Sam and Khuri sand dunes at sunset
✦Desert camp with folk music and Kalbeliya dance
✦Gadisar Lake at sunrise
✦Kuldhara β€” the abandoned village

Who should join

Frequently asked questions

What is the best time to visit Jaisalmer?
October to March. Summer temperatures in the Thar regularly cross 45Β°C, so we do not run summer departures.
How far is Jaisalmer from Ahmedabad?
Approximately 625 km β€” 10 to 11 hours by road, usually done overnight.
Is the desert camp comfortable?
Yes. Our camps use Swiss-tent style accommodation with attached washrooms, plus dinner, folk music and a bonfire.
Sam or Khuri dunes β€” which is better?
Sam is larger and busier with more activities; Khuri is quieter and feels more remote. We can arrange either.
